Whats is Employment Pass?

The Employment Pass (EP) is a work visa designed specifically for foreign professionals, managers, executives, and specialists. Unlike a business visa, it is meant for those taking up salaried employment or directorship roles in Singapore and is issued by the Ministry of Manpower (MOM).

Eligibility Criteria?

Candidates must receive a job offer for a professional, managerial, executive, or technician (PMET) position, draw a minimum fixed monthly salary of at least SGD 5,600 (with higher benchmarks for older applicants and certain sectors such as financial services), and possess acceptable qualifications—typically a recognised university degree, professional certification, or demonstrated specialist expertise.

Additionally, applicants need to satisfy the COMPASS points-based system by scoring at least 40 points (unless they qualify for an exemption under specific sector rules). Meeting these criteria ensures the candidate aligns with Singapore’s standards for skilled foreign talent.

Common Problems Faced

1) Salary too low – Below S$5,600 (2025) or not competitive for age/sector.

2) Qualifications don’t match job – Degree or experience not relevant enough.

3) COMPASS score < 40 – Fails on salary, diversity, qualifications, or shortage list points.

4)  Missing/incomplete documents – Unverified degrees, short passport validity, typos, etc.

5)  No proof of local hiring effort – Job not advertised 14–28 days on MyCareersFuture.sg.

6)  Company issues – Low bank balance, too many foreign workers already.

7) Unjustified big salary jump – Appears to be inflated just to meet the EP minimum threshold.

Fix most rejections by using MOM’s Self-Assessment Tool early, advertising properly, and submitting complete, verified documents. Appeals work best with new evidence within 3 months.

Relocating Family Members to Singapore

Employment Pass (EP) holders in Singapore can sponsor close family members to join them, provided they earn a minimum fixed monthly salary of S$6,000 (with a higher threshold, usually S$12,000+, required to bring parents).

Legally married spouses and unmarried children under 21 qualify for a Dependant’s Pass, while common-law spouses and parents are eligible for a Long-Term Visit Pass. The EP holder’s employer must submit separate applications for each family member through the MOM portal.

Bringing family to Singapore greatly enhances the expatriate experience, helping professionals settle more comfortably and focus on their careers in the city-state.
